Fujian Exchange Tour

In December 2010, four secondary schools students from Tai Po and I went on a four-day exchange tour to Fujian .

On the first day, we arrived in Xiamen and we were given a brief introduction about Fujian . That night, we were greeted with a warm welcome and a dinner treat by the local government officials and universities.

On the next three days, we visited a local food and beverage business – The Yinlu Group, the size of their factories and development is huge. I deeply appreciate the rapid development of Chinese enterprises.

In addition, we also visited the local attraction – Gulangyu. We enjoyed the scenery and looked at the characteristics of the western constructions built in the late Qing Dynasty.

The main focus of this trip is for students to exchange their study experiences and cultural differences.

We were able to talk to some students of Jimei University. I realized how hard it is to be a University student in China after listening to their sharing.

I was most impressed by how considerate and lively the primary school students were during our visit to Tulou primary school. Seeing their happy faces when we gave out some small gifts to them made me reflect on how materialistically spoilt some Hong Kong children are.

In the trip to Fujian, I visited the Earthen Buildings (Tulou) which have great historical value. The building was designed in a traditional style, but it is more modern than I expected. Some of the tulous even have shops in them in order to gain more income. Besides, the surroundings of the area provided pleasant scenery to visitors.

Throughout the visit, I have substantially felt how the people enjoy a simple style of living which made me reflect on how we are living our lives in a city of material prosperity and yet still feels unsatisfied. Indeed we should be content with what we have. If everyone feels thankful of what they have, the world will be a better place.
