Guizhou Study Tour

Mr. Cheng Sze Wang
The Assistant Principal

During the Easter Holiday, we held a very special tour to Guizhou. It is special because our students spent a whole day serving our sister school, XingZhi School, in Anshun.

Our students were divided into 4 groups and each group had to prepare and organise activities for the local students for cultural exchange. Taking up the roles, our students got chances to communicate, to teach and to play games with the local students studying in secondary 3. After the one-day school life, our students have developed a harmonious relationship with their local friends, and exchanged their contact information as well.

We also spent a day visiting a famous scenic attraction in Guizhou, the Xijiang One-Thousand Miao Households Village. It is the biggest Miao village in China housing 12 natural villages, 1,200 families and 6,000 people. The most fantastic experience is to climb up a small hill to reach a good spot to view the whole ancient town. Teachers and students enjoyed wearing the Miao's costumes to experience the life of a Miao villager.

I was impressed by the caring and positive attitudes of our students throughout the whole tour, especially when they visited our sister school. Our students were very serious in every reflection session. I was also pleased to see their courtesy and sense of responsibility wherever we went. The trip was definitely an enjoyable and memorable experience to me and our students.

I joined the study trip to Guizhou during the Easter Holiday. After hours and hours of bus rides, we finally arrived at our destination – Guiyang. It was already very late after our long journey, so we could just take a walk to the square nearby.

The second day was the highlight of our trip – a visit to our sister school Xingzhi School. Even though we didn't know the students in the beginning, we have become good friends at the end of the day. The teachers and students there were so friendly and hospitable that they had prepared a lot for the day and showed us around the campus. I was amazed and touched by the learning attitude of our Xingzhi friends. Although their learning environment is not as good as ours, they are studying harder than every single one of us. At the end of the day, we all said goodbye and took pictures with the students there.

The trip was a memorable experience of my life. Growing up in happiness, one often fails to appreciate what happiness really means. I have learned to treasure what I have. I am looking forward to my second visit to Xingzhi School, the place of great humanity. We shall meet again!

The Guizhou study tour is amazing as I have learnt more about Guizhou's local culture and their tourist spots. Most importantly, I met a group of local students in our sister school and we have become good friends.

When we arrived at the sister school Xingzhi School, we saw an unforgettable scene – the students of that school were standing at the main entrance to welcome us. They all felt happy for our visit. After the welcoming ceremony, we started the activities we had prepared for them. The Xingzhi students enjoyed the games a lot.

Our students also took part in the activities prepared by the sister school's students actively. Although we didn't have much time to talk and exchange our views, we still learnt a lot from them. Students there are very self-disciplined and adopt a more serious learning attitude. I was surprised when I knew that they can only use their mobile phone at weekends, or they will be punished.

On the second day of the trip, we visited the living place of Guizhou's minority– Xijiang Miao Nationality Village. We met a lot of nice and friendly Miao people around the village. Our teachers also tried to wear the Miao costumes to experience the Miao's culture and custom.

This Guizhou study tour has brought me new learning experiences! I am looking forward to my next Guizhou visit!

During the Easter Holiday, some WSC students joined the Guizhou study tour. We had a great time enjoying the natural scenery and experiencing the Guizhou culture with the local students there.

My favourite part is the visit to our sister school, Xingzhi School. I had been quite nervous whether their schoolmates would enjoy the activities we had prepared, but my fear soon faded. By the time we arrived at their school, it was totally surprising when we saw their schoolmates stand straightly and welcome us with a bright, warm smile.

My groupmates and I were assigned to share with them the traditional culture of Hong Kong, in terms of food, manner, and our pop culture. I am the one to be responsible for the Cantopop songs and dance. My groupmates and I showed them posters of some famous pop stars and actors, for example, Andy Lau, Leslie Cheung, etc. I had never imagined how active and enthusiastic they were when answering our questions.

After briefly introducing the pop stars, it came to the climax – singing and dancing of Alan Tam's 'Love Trap'! We taught them how to read the lyrics in Cantonese. Our Xingzhi friends didn't know any of the Cantonese pronunciation, but they tried hard to read after me whenever I read a line. I could feel their passion towards learning new knowledge. Afterwards, we taught them how to dance. It was obviously very difficult for them to remember the melody and lyrics of the song, not to mention the dance steps. However, they tried their very best and learnt the steps efficiently within 30 minutes. I believe all of us were sweating under the bright sun. To be honest, I felt a bit tired after dancing for a while. But I was glad to see our friends being so energetic. They threw themselves into the dance and we had the dance together for several times. We truly enjoyed ourselves!

We also had meals at their school canteen while we compared the differences of lifestyles between Hong Kong and Guizhou. Through our conversations, I realized that they would not have a chance to further their studies if they could not get satisfactory results in the public examinations. Some children even started working at a young age, hoping to improve the poor economic situations at home. They value education a lot, so they cherish every single learning opportunity. In contrast, most Hong Kong students are living in favourable conditions, so they seem to take everything for granted. We should appreciate our opportunities to learn at school and join overseas exchange programmes. We should treasure and be thankful for what we have.

I would like to express my gratitude to our teachers-in-charge for arranging this delightful journey for us! I feel really grateful for joining this memorable trip.
