PolyU Service-Learning Hangzhou Trip 2019

4E WONG WANG LAP

During the past post-exam period, I together with 9 students, led by Mr Chau, joined a 10-day voluntary teaching service trip co-organised by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. It is certainly one of the most meaningful and worthwhile experiences that I have ever had.

Prior to the trip, we had to attend a pre-trip workshop in PolyU so as to get familiar with the aims and clients of the service. It was also a good break for us to get acquainted with our undergraduate groupmates as we had to collaborate with one another during the voluntary teaching lessons in Hangzhou Shuren Primary School.

Throughout the service in Hangzhou Shuren Primary School, English, science, health education and personal development lessons were conducted by the PolyU students and we, being a group of secondary school students, played an important role as assistant teachers to them. We were responsible for relieving the workload of the undergraduates in the lessons by assisting them in distributing worksheets, teaching the primary school students in sub-groups and maintaining discipline in class.

On top of that, we also had time to talk and play with the primary school students after the lessons. Being really passionate and hospitable, the students there were eager to have fun with us and I was quite surprised by their proactivity as it was an entirely different picture in Hong Kong. I was also quite moved by their childlike heart as they had reminded me of my childhood life, a period of happiness and carefreeness. It might seem to be excessively sentimental but I sincerely hope that they can all keep their childlike heart as ever just as the Little Prince does. "Growing up is not a problem, forgetting is".

Moreover, I also realized the differences between mainland students and Hong Kong students after being with the primary students there. First of all, mainland students are more motivated than the latter ones. They are usually eager to raise up their hands frequently during the lessons, yet HK students are usually quite silent in the lessons. In terms of enthusiasm, the former ones are usually more proactive. They are willing to answer the questions in the lessons proactively. However, HK students are often quite passive. They would rather wait until the teachers ask them to answer the questions instead of raising their hands.

In addition, I have also learnt that we should seek first to understand then to be understood. The primary school students did not have the obligation to understand our feelings, yet we should try to step in their shoes and understand their thoughts before judging whether they did the right things or not.

To conclude, this service trip has broadened my horizons. It can certainly help me visualise the education situation and the campus life in the mainland.

On 26th June, our School Volunteer Team went to Hangzhou with the Polytechnic University for a visit to Hangzhou Shuren Primary School. Our aim is to understand more about the learning environment of the students in the mainland.

Before the trip, the PolyU students and our students were grouped into 16 groups. My role in the trip was to keep the class in good order. I was one of the members in group 8b. My groupmates were all foreign students. Therefore, I had to overcome my difficulty in speaking Mandarin.

We spent 5 days in Hangzhou Shuren Primary School, teaching the students science, mathematics, English and physical education. Students there were all enthusiastic. Many of them drew for me and they invited me to play basketball at recess. Compared with the students in Hong Kong, Hangzhou students are more motivated to learn. Although there was no air conditioning in the classroom, they focused on the lessons. One student told me that last summer, he fainted as the weather was too hot in the classroom. I was shocked by the learning environment there and I also appreciated their learning attitude.

Overall, I gained a lot from the PolyU students and also the primary students. I learnt problem-solving skills and decision-making capacities to face any sudden situations during the class. It is my pleasure to join this wonderful service learning.
