Sharing from     Kwan Lok Tin (7B)

Legislator Miss Emily Lau talks about the parliamentary culture of Hong Kong and democracy...

Citizens of Hong Kong should be familiar with the scenario in the Legistrative Council: legislators wearing T-shirts with a big slogan, throwing bananas, shouting and swearing at the president of the Council. This new parliamentary culture of Hong Kong has provoked a heated debate in the society.

Miss Emily Lau, legislator and the chairperson of the Finance Committee of the LegCo, has her unique views on this issue. Invited by the Student Association of our school, Miss Lau shared her opinions with some of our students in the LegCo building. The interview was filmed and posted on the internet so that students can watch the video online anytime.

Miss Lau said whatever she thinks, she has never had personal attacks on others. It is her personal conviction that violence cannot solve any problem. She also talked about democracy, which she thought is what many Hong Kong people are striving for. As an elected representative, she made efforts in fighting for human rights. Because of her stance, she is not allowed to visit the mainland. "It is ridiculous for Beijing to ban us from going to the mainland," she said. She ended the sharing by encouraging students to study hard and emphasizing the importance of learning English.
