My valuable experience in Model United Nations Assembly 2009

Last summer holiday, I had participated in Model United Nations Assembly 2009 in Guangzhou. For me, it is the most enjoyable trip that I have ever had and I have learnt a lot from the activity.

In the Assembly, I had to speak as the delegates from Kenya (a country in East Africa) in the Economic and Social Council. My mission was to debate on the problem of water scarcity and environmental refugee. It gave me a chance to know more about this country as I needed to gather a lot of information about the country and help them to fight for their rights. Kenya is very poor and most of the Kenyans do not have enough water for drinking or cleaning but they still enjoy their life (They usually dance together happily). This impresses me most since the resources that I enjoy is much more than I need but I very often do not treasure those resources and feel distressed when facing problems. Therefore, I should learn from them.

Besides, in the trip, I needed to deliver my speeches to all the delegates in the council and make notes on what others said. This help training my spoken English. Also, when some Chinese talked to me, I could only speak Putonghua. Therefore, I had the opportunities to speak the languages that I had not spoken for decades.

Something surprised me was that students from Guangzhou could speak very fluent English and they spoke even better than the students in Hong Kong. They had been taught by native English speakers since they are very young. This shows me the necessity for me to improve my spoken English.

The most rewarding thing in the trip is know many new friends. In the first day, all the delegates needed to have a lucky draw before having dinner to find out which tables they belonged to. Thus, I talked to many delegates in my table and took photos with them. Some of them were from Mongolia and I was curious to know more about their life. In the council, I met some friends from Korea. Although we could only speak in English, we still become friends and form allies in the debate. Also, the Guangzhou students were very friendly and they told me lots of things about their life.

Lastly, it is worth having the trip and getting such unforgettable experience. I hope I will have a chance to join similar activity again.

My sharing after joining Model United Nations Assembly 2009

'Building a Peaceful World with Understanding' is the mission of MUNA 2009. In fact, organized by the Rotary International District 3450, Model United Nations Assembly 2009 (MUNA 2009) is a genuine simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and other multilateral parts of the United Nations. Undoubtedly, I was glad that I got a chance to participate in this meningful program last summer.

Of course, three other students and I from our school were the participants and we were, also known as the delegates. We took the roles of diplomats of the representing country. I were the delegate representing the Republic of Kenya, a developing country in East Africa. As simulation of the UN General Assembly, MUNA 2009 simulates 4 Committees of the United Nations, namely the Disarmament and International Security Committe (DISEC), the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), the Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Since I belonged to the ECOSOC, the conference mainly focus on two topics. They were 'Environmental Refugee' and 'Water Scarcity'.

Before joining the program, I had never heard of this country or any related idea of the debating topics. However, I had put great efforts in doing lots of researches. Problems like 'environmental refugee' and 'water scarcity' are so urgent even though I have never heard of these terms before. After doing researches, I have a better understanding concept now. I found that there were many serious global problems. Take the problem of 'water scarcity' as an example. The distribution of water resources in the world is obviously uneven. People in Hong Kong are relatively lucky to have all the remedies in rich supply, cas ompared with these developed countries.

Not only can the program arouse my awareness on some global issues, it also provides me with experiences of how the United Nations conference run. Surely, we had to debate in the conference. This was really a difficult task for me because preparation could not help me a lot. Just like some inter-class debating competitions, , I requried to retort others directly apart from delivering my own views. This could not be done easily because without enough preparation, I was very nervous, especially when facing so many elites. This was also the things impressed me so much because participants from Guangzhou, Mongolia, Korea and the Philippines could speak English fluently. I even found it difficult to listen to their speech as they spoke as fluently as some English native speakers. This proves that Hong Kong is not in an advantageous position anymore since many students in other places can do better than students Hong Kong. Clearly, I should improve my English and all other abilities so as to catch up with others.

In a word, I highly recommended this program to my fellow students.

Feelings about MUNA

In the last summer vacation, I joined a challenging program called MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly). This program was held in Guangzhou for four days long. I was a delegate of Kenya in ECOFIN (Economics and Financial Committee).

I can roughly divide the program into three parts; they are a 26-hour assembly, dining and an international night.

Firstly, talking about the long period of assembly, it was the main part of MUNA. To be honest, the hours in the assembly hall were quite hard for me and other delegations to tolerate. In the hall, we needed to listen to other delegations’ speeches and give responses as soon as possible. At the same time, everyone was working on the working paper and draft resolution with a laptop for the assembly. As a result, our eyes, backbones and even spirits were so tired. To me, it was a bit toilsome but also very challenging.

What is more, as there were participants from Korea and the Philippines, it made us more difficult for us to understand their speeches. However, it became interesting to talk to them when I was accustomed to different accents. After joining the program, I became more confident in speaking to different people.

Moreover, during the four days, our delegation was required to imagine that we were the people in Kenya. After a section had ended, we kept working until the early hours on the documents for another section of the assembly. Therefore, we could not be Hong Kong people during the days and it was really an unprecedented experience for me!

Secondly, participants were learning in another way during dinnertime. As I mentioned, there were participants from other countries so that the only language we could speak while eating was also English. This was the first time that I had ever realized English makes people closer. The fabulous dinnertime makes me often sick for MUNA. I hope it would also be a good memory in others’ minds.

Last but not least, the fascinating international night was one of the enjoyments I had in MUNA. All of us dressed in traditional costumes and performed as amazingly as we could. What we had prepared was shown in a splendid and glorious way. Nothing was more important than enjoying our performance at that moment. It was actually not crucial to win but experience the race.

I learnt and experienced so much in MUNA. I believe they affect my life!

Joining the MUNA2009 was one of the most unforgettable experiences during the summer holiday.

At first, I thought that I should not go as it was very harsh on the first day. We needed to attend on assembly for at least four hours day. At night, we had to prepare our work for the next day’s assembly. Every night, we could only sleep 3-4hours. It was very tiring. However, I really enjoyed the time talking to different people from different places. I could make a lot of friends there and shared what we felt about MUAN. Moreover, Peter, Mani, Rainbow and I practiced dancing every night in order to prepare for the international night. I was very excited when we were performing on the stage and having the cat-walk show.

In fact, I was as happy as a clam when joining MUNA2009. Not only screaming during the international night made me feel excited, but also the assembly. Sometimes, I was very tired during the four or even eight-hour-long assembly. Once I fell asleep during the assembly. Rainbow woke me up and some other friends tried to talk to me in order to make me be conscious. Then I talked more during the assembly. At that time, I realized that I could learn a lot by listening to what other participants said and give responses to them. By exchanging our opinions, I made a lot of friends and they taught me a lot.

After taking part in this activity, I am not as nervous as before when giving a public speech. Also, I understand how important English is. When I was attending the MUNA, we had to communicate with others in English, as many of them are overseas participants. In short, I really enjoyed the days attending MUNA2009.
