English Learning Leadership Programme (2009)

In July I participated an English Learning Leadership Programme with David Chiu and Lorna Lo. This is organized by Hong Kong International School and the duration was three weeks. I am glad to have joined this activity because it is a very valuable experience.

During those three weeks, I had to attend different English lessons such as Writing, Speaking, Leadership, Research and Experiential Learning. All of them were taught by English Native Speakers in American style. Students were free to express their opinions. The teachers were very nice as well. They encouraged students to speak out their ideas. No matter how much you talk, they will give you an affirmative response which boosts your confidence. In fact my home room teacher, Mr. Ewing influenced me a lot. In the past, I always tried to escape from any opportunity of public speaking. After this programme, I won't refuse to deliver a speech anymore. This is the biggest benefit I gained from this programme.

The purpose of the programme is to teach us to become a leader. We had many projects and we had to do presentations in every lesson. Actually, I have gained a lot in this programme, because we could only speak English and this has enhanced our oral skills. I have also met lots of new friends who came from different schools. Now we still have contacts with each other. On the other hand, I like Experiential learning lessons most because the games we played were extremely inspiring and meaningful. The lessons were like PE lessons and we always had exciting tasks such as rock-climbing and water gun fight. This helped us to develop problem solving skills and team spirit which are very useful. The most memorable words from my teacher are 'You have to be brave to speak up your feelings. If not, you could only accept everything that people arrange for you.' This is very important in the future working environment.

Let me tell you a secret. At the beginning, I deeply regretted I had enrolled in this programme because I had to wake up at 5:30 every morning. But then, I thought it was worthwhile because being a part of this big family is very lucky. If I were still a form 3 student, I would definitely join this course again. So, look for the chance and make up your mind!
