Group Discussion and Presentation
Money Yeung

The most practical experience is definitely group discussion. Discussion allows us to express what we have learnt and to clear up the confusions we may have, hence avoid making the same mistakes. It also provides us with the opportunity to engage in interaction with our teacher and classmates. Members from other groups and our teacher would kindly make comment on our presentation. It's such a valuable opportunity for me to make improvement.

Our view of democracy:

Learning History Through Films

Film is a vivid form of historical discourse. Many films manifest issues that are seldom discussed in classroom. Filmed versions of history engage students’ emotions and cultivate their interests in the past. When film is used instructionally, students can acquire sensitivities and critical skills of the sort bestowed upon book-based history.

Cindy Wai

Do you think that History is a boring subject? Our history lessons may change your view. In our history lessons, apart from discussions and presentations, watching historic movies or videos is another way to learn history. For instance, we watched Bodyguards and Assassins 十月圍城 in the last academic year. The movie is about an important moment in China's history in 1905 when Sun Yat Sen planned to meet rebel leaders in Hong Kong in order to coordinate the anti-Qing revolutionary movement. The bodyguards in the film's title refer to those who fight to protect Sun against the loyalist assassins sent by the Qing government. Watching the movie is not just for entertainment, but it reminds us that the success of the 1911 Revolution is the interplay of different factors and Sun Yat Sen’s effort is only one of the factors.

We also watched The Great Dictator 大獨裁者. The film is a satire on Nazism and Fascism in general, and the tyrant rule of Adolf Hitler in particular. In the film, Charlie plays a dual role- a Jewish private and the dictator of Tomania (Hitler). His outstanding performance let me memorize the chaotic situation of Nazi Germany and the life under Hitler's government. Therefore, watching movies is an interesting way to learn history.

Poster Design / Drawing Historical Cartoon

A historical cartoon is a type of drawing used to present opinions, comments, or criticisms of a situation, person or event. Cartoons help us understand information by presenting it in a visual and memorable way. By drawing a historical cartoon, students are engaged in three levels of comprehension:

1. Recognition: Students draw meaningful characters and objects which can be cited as clues to interpret the cartoonist's message.
2. Inferential: At this level students arrive at generalization or conclusion about what they are trying to convey and why.
3. Critical: Students are encouraged to express their opinions which invite other students to recognize bias / objectivity and to cite evidence for it. In the process students learn how to differentiate viewpoint from fact.
