For promoting statistical literacy, the Mathematics Department has invited the Statistician from the Census and Statistics Department (C & SD) to deliver a talk on “How to be a smart data user on sample surveys-Tips for identifying a properly conducted sample survey and interpretation of survey results” to our S.5 students. The talk would be useful in enhancing their knowledge, particularly in respect of the application of official statistics in interpreting the social and economic issues in an objective and effect manner.

Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary Schools(2022-23)

To promote project-based learning, our school has sent five teams of students to participate in the Mathematics Project Competition. Two teams obtained the Good performance Prizes and two teams were successfully selected as the finalists. In the final interview section held for the finalists, our teams had good performance and both teams got the Outstanding Performance Prizes of this competition.

Interclass Maths Competition

To enhance mathematical abilities among students, an Inter class competition was conducted for students of classes of S1 and S2.

The first round was held on 5 May 2023 for S1 students and the second round was held on 12 may 2023 for S2 students. The competition consists of 4 individual and 2 group events. Four representatives were nominated from each class to participate in this competition.

The talk would be useful in enhancing their knowledge, particularly account of the trends of external merchandise trade and trade in services in Hong Kong.

The talk would be useful in enhancing their knowledge, particularly how national income statistics such as Gross Domestic Product and Gross National Incomes are measured and how they help reflect the economic developments in Hong Kong.

The 10th HK Mathematics Creative Problem Solving Competition and the Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary Schools (2018-2019)

To promote creativity and project-based learning, our school has sent one team of students to participate in the Mathematics Creative Problem Solving Competition and two teams of students to participate in the Mathematics Project Competition. Following a keen competition in the Heat Event, the team of four students secured the Gold Award in the Mathematics Creative Problem Solving Competition. For the Mathematics Project Competition, one team was awarded the Good Performance Prize and other team was invited to attend the final interview and successfully got the Second Runner-up and the Best Presentation Prize of this competition.

Career Talk – Mathematics Education

To enhance students' interest in mathematics and know more about the JUPAS programme choices offered by The Education University of Hong Kong, the Mathematics Department and Careers and Further Studies Committee organized a seminar for S4 and S5 students. Dr. LEUNG King Shun (Associate Head, Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, The Education University of Hong Kong )was the speaker for the talk.

Honourable Mention in the Hang Lung Mathematics Awards 2016

The Hang Lung Mathematics Awards is a biennial Mathematics research competition for secondary school students in Hong Kong. It is co-organized by Hang Lung Properties, The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the Department of Mathematics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Mak Siu Hong (6E), Lai Chun Ming (6E) and Mong Kin Ip (6E in 2015-2016) joined The Hang Lung Mathematics Awards 2016 under the supervision of Mr Kwong Chun Yu. They submitted a report of their research titled "Triples of Sums of Two Squares" in August 2016.

The team was invited to participate in an oral defense session conducted by the Scientific Committee on 14th December, 2016. The Scientific Committee was led by the Fields medalist Professor Shing Tung Yau and composed of 11 prominent Mathematicians from Harvard University, University of Michigan, Brandeis University, National University of Singapore, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Taiwan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Each team needed to give a brief presentation of their research, followed by inquiries made by the members of the Scientific Committee.

The team won an Honorable Mention and received a total of $60,000 from the Student Education Award, Teacher Leadership Award and School Development Grant. It was the third time our students won prizes in the Hang Lung Mathematics Awards. We won the Bronze Award in 2006 and an Honorable Mention in 2012.

To promote project-based learning, our school has sent six teams of students to participate in the Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary Schools (2016-17). Our teams had made remarkable achievement in the final adjudication. One team was awarded the Champion, three teams secured the Outstanding Performance Prizes and the other two teams got the Good Performance Prizes.

International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest - Hong Kong 2017

The International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest - Hong Kong 2017 is an annual event to identify students with outstanding performance in mathematics. The students with good result will be provided with training programme and some students with outstanding performance would be selected to represent Hong Kong to take part in the 58th IMO in 2017.

Tse Lap Yan (5E) was awarded Honorable Mention in the event.

The International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest - Hong Kong 2016

The International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest - Hong Kong 2016 was co-organized by the Education Bureau, the IMO (Hong Kong) Committee and The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education. This is an annual event to select students with outstanding performance in mathematics. Follow on training programmes will be provided for the high-achieving students of the contest. The students with outstanding performance in such training will be selected to represent Hong Kong to take part in the 57th IMO in 2016.

Lai Chun Ming (5E) was awarded Bronze Award and Mak Siu Hong(5E) was awarded Honorable Mention in the event.

The Hong Kong Mathematics Olympiad (HKMO) is a competition which has been jointly organized by the EDB and the HKIEd since 1983. Our school was awarded Merit Prize in the event.

To promote the interest of students in learning Mathematics and develop students’ generic skills, our school has sent some junior form and senior form students to participate in the Mathematics Book Report Competition. The result is encouraging. One junior form and three senior form students were awarded the Second Class Prizes.

Student Education Fair on Science, Technology & Mathematics 2016

The first Student Education Fair on Science, Technology and Mathematics was held on January 22 and 23 of 2016. It aims to showcase and celebrate a wide range of student achievements on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related areas. This signature event will provide quality learning experiences for students to enhance their interests in learning, creativity and innovation as well as to strengthen their ability in integrating and applying cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills. Our school was invited to the exhibition to showcase our achievements on STEM related disciplines. Some S4E students, Chen Yui Lap, Cheng Hoi Wai, Lee Sha Lee, Liu Tsz Yu, Lui Him, So Hei Tung, Tsui Tsz Kwan and Wong Pui Shan, who were Student Participants in the exhibition, were awarded an outstanding presentation Prize. The event was videotaped for future sharing and this provided a joint-school platform for motivation of students' learning and enhancement of their self-esteem.

The 57th International Mathematical Olympiad Lecture

The 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) will be held in Hong Kong in 2016. In order to arouse students; awareness of this international mathematical event and enhance their interest in mathematics, the EDB and the Organizing Committee of the 57th IMO 2016 jointly organize the "Mathematics World Lecture Series". Some S4 students had attended lecture on 12 Dec 2015. The topic of the lecture was "Mathematics and Politics". Weighted voting system and other political issues were analysized in a mathematical way. It was a very good experience to train students' mathematical thinking.

Mathematics Education Forum 「數味人生」

February 27, 2014 (Thursday)

Three committee members of the Mathematics Club were nominated to attend a Mathematics Forum jointly organized by the HKU Education Faculty and Canotta publishing Co. Ltd.. In the forum, two former Mathematics teachers and now Legislative councilors, the Hon Jasper TSANG Yok Sing, GBS, JP (President of the Legislative Council of HKSAR) and the Hon LEUNG Yiu Chung shared with students on how mathematics influence their thinking and life.

The Hang Lung Mathematics Awards

The Hang Lung Mathematics Awards is a biennial mathematics research competition for secondary school students in Hong Kong. It is co-organized by Hang Lung Properties, The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the Department of Mathematics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Kwan Him Shek (6E), Wan Chin Ching (2011-12 6E) and Lo Ka Chun (2011-12 7B) joined The Hang Lung Mathematics Awards 2012 under the supervision of Mr Kwong Chun Yu. They submitted a report of their research titled "How to Cut a Piece of Paper - Making Paper Cones with the Greatest Total Capacity" in August 2012. Their report was sent to three referees who themselves are mathematicians for review. The research received very positive comments from the three referees:

“We can see from the report that the authors have strong innovation consciousness and application ability on using mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems. In my opinion, this report is very good.”

“Their analysis and proof of the result is rigorous and completed on mathematical. I think the result of this report is very interesting, original and is an excellent work for high school students, the writing of this paper is also very good.”

“The topic is interesting, the methods are effective, and the results are very useful. They completed a fine work.”

“Very amusing problem requiring some clever calculus, trigonometry and numerical approximation. Attractive introduction; good writing and illustrations. Results were not known to me.”

The team was invited to participate in the oral defense session held on 17th December, 2012 conducted by the Scientific Committee. The Scientific Committee was led by Fields medalist Prof. Shing Tung Yau and composed of 11 prominent mathematicians from Harvard University, Stanford University, Columbia University, Cornell University, University of Michigan, Tohoku University, University of Science and Technology of China, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The University of Hong Kong. Teams which participated in the oral defense each gave a brief presentation of their research, followed by an inquiry session before the members of the Scientific Committee.

The team won the Honorable Mentions and received $60,000 in total for Student Education Award, Teacher Leadership Award and School Development Grant.

Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary School(2010-2011)

To promote the interest of students in learning Mathematics and develop students' generic skills, our school has sent two teams of junior form students to participate in the Mathematics Project Competition. Both of the teams were selected as the finalists and after a heat competition they were awarded the Outstanding Performance Prizes.
Another competition worth mentioning is the Mathematics Book Report Competition. The three participants of our school have achieved good results. Two S2 students of our school obtained the Second Class Prizes and one S1 student got a high score of her report and obtained the First Class Prize. The Prize-giving ceremony of both competitions was held at the University of Science and Technology in July. The winning teams and students were awarded trophies, medals and certificates of merits in the event.
