My Schooldays

It is so exciting to celebrate our school’s 50th anniversary. In the past 5 decades, I am sure our school has bred countless all-round students. They have made different contributions to make our city prosperous. As a fresh graduate of Form 7, I truly understand how students can be deeply inspired in their daily school lives in Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School.

The exam-oriented school system is not easy for Hong Kong students. The ossified education system gives student a lot of pressure. Sometimes we are frustrated and nervous about our schoolwork and exam results. Fortunately, teachers in our school always give us support and encouragement that can help us to overcome the obstacles ahead of us.

For the sake of getting good results in public exams, we were given a lot of tests and homework in our Form 5 year. We were so stressed and worried. One day, my English teacher asked me to see her after school. I was terribly worried. Was my performance in the tests very bad? Was she angry with me? To my surprise, she did not say anything about my work. Instead, she just shared with me her experiences in her studies. She gave me a bookmark with a slogan “Keep it up” on it. That was a heartwarming experience for me. Indeed, responsible and benevolent teachers are the greatest assets of this school. Without our teachers’ care, we cannot achieve success to our best ability.

Not only do the teachers encourage us to work hard, the school also provides a lot of opportunities for students to develop their potential. There are a wide variety of school clubs and activities that students can join. Some active students take part in various sports activities. Others participate in speech and music festivals or design competitions. Of course, there are school rules that we have to follow. Students in Wong Shiu Chi are generally self-disciplined. Some of them are prefects and help the others to rectify their unseemly behaviour.

I am a student who loves challenges. As a result, I made a decision that has changed my life: to run for the President of Students’ Association.

As I was running for the election, I had a lot more chances to know more about our school. We gave suggestions to the school and discussed them with the Principal everything concerning our fellow students. We had our own ideas. We might have views quite different from the school, but our Principal was open-minded and patient and he was willing to listen to us. His respect for students in this school has helped us to develop a critical mind.

What impressed me most when I was running for the election were the debates between me and my opponents. We had very heated debates on various issues. Throughout these debates, students could actively voice their opinions and express their views about the school by questioning candidates running for the election. To me, I was deeply touched by the enthusiasm of our schoolmates about everything in the school. Their great sense of belonging of students is definitely remarkable.

“Time flies when you are enjoying yourself” – cliché as it may seem, I guess this is the best way to describe my past seven years’ secondary school life in Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School. It is my honour to have been a student of this school. Though I have left this lovely campus, I am certain that with the excellent learning atmosphere our school will breed many future leaders of our society.
