My Days in WSC

The Old stories are still vivid

I remember when I chose my secondary school, the spaciousness of the campus struck me just right. My parents also thought that I could make some special memories in every corner of this spacious campus. Interesting stories like having basketballs thrown to the woods behind the courts, enjoying the night view of the campus after supplementary classes and accidentally spilling pungent chemicals in the lab are still on my mind. Among those, the most memorable part is the time we prepared for the HKDSE. We were the "pioneer" of the pandemic, mock exams were canceled halfway and the "last day" was gone. It was like everything was fast-forwarded and lots of precious moments were skipped. Suddenly, all we could do was to stay at home and study on our own. Fortunately, the school understood our worries and effectively established an online platform to provide guidance and assistance to us. Teachers from all subjects provided Zoom lectures at the expense of their spare time, just to make sure we were well-prepared. I was so thankful to my Physics, Chemistry, and Biology teachers, namely Mr. Yam, Ms. Law, and Mr. Tse, who took care of all the strange and sometimes dumb questions I posted on the Moodle forum. Their patience and detailed reply made me have a broader understanding of the unfamiliar parts.

Opportunities at Wong Shiu Chi

It was so encouraging that Wong Shiu Chi kept providing a great variety of opportunities to students with different strengths. There were five different service teams and there were no restrictions on participation, so I had joined three of them. Among them, the Students' Association was the most rewarding one. Working on proposals with the committee member and discussing various probabilities with teachers, I learned a lot about running different activities and the role of the Students' Association. I also noticed some loopholes in the Constitution and I tried to revise it, aiming to refine the SA's structure and role on one hand, and encouraging more junior schoolmates to take part in this great service team on the other hand. Apart from the service teams, Wong Shiu Chi provided a couple of career-related opportunities, making me plan to pursue a research career. The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) competition and its training course in S3 dug out my curiosity and passion for science; the medical genetics summer course funded by Wong Shiu Chi in S5 furthered established my interest in molecular biology, not to mention the countless workshops and group competitions launched by the school. All these drew my future path bit by bit.

Building "I"

Not only does Wong Shiu Chi focus on academic development, it also helps with students' personal development. In recent years, the cultures of our community are changing fast. The overflowing information may make the young generation feel lost. To hold on, having strong personal uniqueness is the key. The great variety of opportunities given by Wong Shiu Chi leads students to search for their potential and personal uniqueness. In my story, the greatest blessing in Wong Shiu Chi is to meet Mr. Yam Yee Kin, my Physics teacher who also inspires me a lot. After class, he always shared his very different but interesting thoughts, which made me reflect on myself and re-shape my point of view. It is like outlining the concept of "I" bit by bit, so I can always ponder on issues with a different and effective perspective. The most memorable line from him was "Medicine is, in fact, application biology". This brought me inspiration on choosing between Medicine and Science for my bachelor's degree. This also makes me reflect on the relationship between science and technology. When asked "why science" now, I always reply with "Technology builds things but science opens up wasteland".

Epilogue

Without Wong Shiu Chi, I must not have become what I am today. I cannot be more thankful to my alma mater. I hope I can return to Wong Shiu Chi to continue the lovely memories some days.
