My Amazing Life in Wong Shiu Chi

There is a great difference in the aspects of school life, relationships, learning and extra-curricular activities. After a few months at university, I have found that the life in secondary school was so different, not only in terms of school life, but all.

Relationships with classmates and teachers

The ways of building relationships with different schoolmates are very different. In university, it is difficult to find a person who is having lessons or joining activities together every day with me as students have different lecture time, join different societies and clubs and go to different college. To maintain friendships with them, constant messaging or meetings may be required. Those should be organized actively by ourselves, which is something similar to running a business.

In Wong Shiu Chi, the sense of unity in my class is very strong. Although different classmates may have their own best friends in class, the overall atmosphere in the class is harmonious. We would feel free to share anything whatever we want with our classmates. Our relationships are strengthened through different activities such as singing contest or even casual dinner. Sometimes we would do something crazy, like singing birthday song to Mr. Kwong every day (as we do not know when his birthday is). These bits of school life have made our class unique. Though after HKDSE, our class does not meet very frequently, I still enjoy the moments with our classmates every time.

Those close relationships teachers and students is also priceless. Our teachers are passionate in teaching. Mr. Kwong, Miss Law and Miss Lam always answered our questions after-class. Miss Yu, Mr. Leung and Miss Ko trained us hard to achieve a better score in the post exam period. We did not only acquire knowledge in the textbook and the curriculum, we also learnt to shape ourselves. Mr. Yam would educate us on critical thinking and logical thinking so that we do not only know about the knowledge of Physics, but also how to become a better person. A strong bonding is formed among us with teachers as we enjoy the meaningful classes brought by teachers, being conscientious and supportive to us.

Experience in Extra-curricular Activities

I was the vice-chairperson of Science Club and a committee member of Design and Technology Club. The experiences in holding activities for junior classmates at school has given me valuable experiences in organizing large scale events. Therefore, I have joined the Creativity Laboratory as one of the student convenors to organize different activities related to Science and Technologies at college. For example, one of the activities was combining arts and technologies to produce digital arts. Wong Shiu Chi has provided me some fundamental knowledge on using technologies and equipment to aid our designs and creation which has the activities run more smoothly.

Apart from club activities, there are also many chances to participate in external competitions which could widen my view. I had a chance to participate in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad, Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad and Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition when I was in Form 5. Although I did not get any prizes from these competitions, I have learnt a lot from other participating teams. It has also trained me with a systematic way in tackling problems efficiently and effectively. Due to the pandemic, lots of extra-activities are suspended and chance of participating in competitions and activities becomes rare. These experiences therefore become precious to me.

Unique Experiences Under the Pandemic

Under the epidemic, there are no face-to-face lessons, and less interaction in the lessons. There are more challenges when we are having online lessons, for example, technical issues about joining the lessons and difficulties on learning the change of modes. However, these challenges have equipped us with better skills in handling difficulties and overcoming them. Using online conference has become a new trend in this era and it allows us to communicate with people all around the world instantly, which facilitates life-long learning and we are able to absorb more diversified knowledge.

As an undergraduate in AISTN, I hope that the lectures that allow us to reflect the development in artificial intelligence and its influences to society. The development of AI is boosting nowadays and many jobs might be replaced by AI soon. Hence, life-long learning becomes much more important in the 21st century. I still believe that there are lots of areas like arts that cannot be replaced by AI, as AI can create artwork but cannot understand art. Therefore, I hope everyone equip themselves in their field of interest so that we can find our own role in the future! Treasure your time in Wong Shiu Chi and try to get in touch with different things.
